: So, how are the 'official' robot sumou wresting playing surfaces
: constructed? Specifically, what material is the playing area made of, and
: is it covered with anything (I remember hearing that a rubberized membrane
: was stretched over the playing area, but if this is so, what material is
: used for the membrane?) Also, how do you move (and store) the 1.5meter
: playing surface - is it constructed such that it can be dismantled?

You could probably cover the playing field with a sheet of rubber
roofing material. It comes 10' to 20' wide, about .45 or .65 mils thick.
You can buy this from a roofing supply house (check the yellow pages). I
used to run a roofing supply house and we sold this for 22 cents to 45 cents
per square foot. They'll probably cut it down to size for you, otherwise
you can just use scissors. You can fold up this tarp and carry it in the
backseat of your car. When you unfold it and lay it out, you might need to
let it relax for an hours or so before fastening it to the playing field
with screws.
You can fasten it to plywood using what are called termination bars--
"term bars" about 10' long aluminum bars with holes drilled in them for
screws.
