Symposium on Manufacturing Automation Programming Language Environments (MAPLE)

October 4-5, 1993 Ottawa, Canada

________________________________________________________________________________

The rapid growth of CAD/CAM/CIM and robotics and the growing role of product
and production data exchange between systems has increased the need for a
language environment to support the many manufacturing application languages in
use.
This fact has been acknowledged by the International Organization for
Standardization when ISO TC184/SC5/WG4 (Technical Committee 184,
Subcommittee 5, Working Group 4 on "Manufacturing Programming Environment") was
given the task of specifying the architecture and components of MAPLE
(Manufacturing Automation Programming Language Environment). MAPLE is envisaged
to be an integrated set of software based tools and services to support the
programming, configuration, operation and maintenance of automated
manufacturing systems.

The goal of this symposium is to bring together CAx and robotics application
language/system developers, users, educators and standards developers to
identify environmental needs for the support of faster and higher quality
application program development and to share experiences
on development trends. The symposium is also meant to provide opportunities for
the exchange of ideas between application language developers, users and
developers of MAPLE standards.

The organizing committee is looking for contributions on the following topics:
Case studies giving experiences (good or bad) with integrated manufacturing
systems, programming languages or standards.
Needs and development trends of manufacturing automation languages.
Harmonization/standardization work on automation languages, use of
international and 'de facto' standards.
Needs for training in, and experience with, automation languages at
educational institutions.
MAPLE components. Services for user interfaces, tool integration, data
handling, data specification libraries and program libraries.
Aspects of information technology such as data dictionaries, software tool
dictionaries, data repositories.
Modeling technology, development of simulation systems and scheduling systems
for manufacturing facilities or processes.

In support of this effort the National Research Council of Canada is assisting
ISO TC184/SC5/WG4 in organizing the MAPLE'93 Symposium to be held October 4-5,
1993 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. MAPLE'93 is the third in a series of
international symposia on this environment topic. Contributions are invited in
the areas above.

Authors should submit three copies of a 1000-word summary in English, excluding
figures, to the program chairman by April 15, 1993. Please
include a cover page indicating complete names, addresses, and affiliations of
all authors, and telephone or fax number of the principal author.

Notice of acceptance will be mailed to the principal author by May 15, 1993.
Final papers must be on 8.5 x 11 inch (or A-4) paper, maximum
of 15 pages, and must be submitted by August 15, 1993. Further instructions on
the preparation of the papers will be sent with the notice of acceptance.
