Look into the FAQ for sci.vr-worlds (if I recall the newsgroup name
correctly). A relatively low-cost device is The Bird from Ascension
Inc. in Burlington, VT, USA. It is an electromagnetic device that
provides real-time position and attitude (attitude matrix, Cardan
angles, and/or quaternions) of a sensor w.r.t. a source. Each con-
tains three mutually perpendicular coils which are pulse-driven at
the source whence position and attitude of the sensor w.r.t. the
source can be assessed.

There are various opto-electronic and ultrasonic systems, but they
are much more expensive.
