As a victim of the same problem, I sympathize!  There are two separate
steps for saving a visual part:

  (1)  "Save Part" from the "File" menu.  This allows you to bring up
       a new window with your changes from the composition editor.

  (2)  "Generate Archival Code" from the "File" menu.  This saves the
       state of your composition editor.  Unless you do this, opening
       a new composition editor will not show your changes (sigh).
