: One advantage of PP-D Smalltalk I see is that there is a
: Distributed Smalltalk product available NOW!! Hewlett-Packard has a
: GREAT product that is CORBA 2.0 compliant which is totally written

Come November 30th or so (the availability date of VisualAge/IBM Smalltalk
3.0), there will be a new feature for Distributed. There's a web page on
it at <http://www.torolab.ibm.com/software/ad/visage/varc/varcdist.htm>
and a white paper at:

: The IBM web page I've browsed (http://www.software.ibm.com/software/
: ad/vastub.html or somewhere around there) informs me that they
: are not yet CORBA compliant (version 1 or 2!).

True, the Distributed feature is not CORBA compliant, and probably never
will be. The nice thing about not being CORBA compliant is that you're
not CORBA compliant :-). No IDL. Distributed is for Smalltalk <->
Smalltalk only. Objects in remote images act just like 'local' objects
- you can debug across images, etc.

For CORBA-heads, we have SOM support (I think just for OS/2 and AIX, no
Windows yet). We're as CORBA compliant as SOM is. Version 3 sports the
new Smalltalk CORBA mapping, for mapping IDL into Smalltalk.
