For a basic Smalltalk introduction, the manual to the GNU Smalltalk is
quite good. It doesn't cover any graphics, but that might help
you as it concentrates on the very basics. It also has the
advantage to be free. Available at your favorite GNU mirror site...

For a concise description of the language I found the Parc Place
VisualWorks User's Guide very good.

For a more recent publication, you might want to take a look at:

I liked the chapter on model-view-controller very much.
