In my wandering as a consultant I like to try out VisualWorks on
whatever machines I come across. Here are the results of running the
VisualWorks 2.0 Advanced Tools Benchmark (all tests, repeated 5 times)
on platforms I've encountered over the last six months, using a virgin
image except for loading the Advanced Tools benchmark. The numbers
are really only hints at relative performance: there are so many
variables to take into account (amount of virtual memory, system
extensions installed, OS versions, etc.) that it's probably futile to
try for definitive results.

Macintosh

	Quadra 610, 32mb, Virtual Memory off 278

Quadra 630, 12mb memory, Virtual Memory off 361
				with 20mb VM 268
				with Ram Doubler 335

	Quadra 650, 32mb, Virtual Memory off 372

	Quadra 700, 8mb, 19mb Virtual Memory 224
(very sensitive to amount of VM: more slows!)
		(doesn't work with Ram Doubler!)

	Powerbook 540c, 20mb, Virtual Memory off 289

PC

	Gateway 2000 486DX2, 66 MHz, 12mb 727

	AST Premia 486DX2, 66 MHz, 16mb 345
(I don't know much about the Premia I used or
its setup -- nothing to account for the
		 discrepancy with the Gateway 2000.)

	Compaq Aero (subnotebook), 25MHz mono, 12mb 207

Unix

	Sparc 5, 32mb 1084
