It depends on the computers you have available. 

If, for example, you have access to a Macintosh, I recommend
"SmalltalkAgents," from Quasar Knowledge Systems, which is located
near you (Bethesda, MD). They just announced "SmalltalkAgents LITE,"
for a very reasonable $95. A very nice environment, and lots of
included documentation. Even a tutorial, STA-specific version of "A
Quick Trip to ObjectLand."

I recommend this package over Smalltalk/V for the Macintosh, which I
also have (version 1.3).

For Windows or Unix machines, I have no experience. I've heard a
student discount for ParcPlace's "VisualWorks" is available, but it's
still pricey.

In summary, get a Smalltalk and start working through it. In my view,
this is the best approach.
