.hqx files are BinHexed; BinHex is a Mac decoding format similar to
uuencode. There aren't very many good tools for unix/DOS machines that
will do the necessary conversions. Your best bet is probably a package
called mcvert, which you can get from one of the many Mac mirrors (for
instance, ftp.pht.com:/pub/mac/mirrors/umich/ or thereabouts). It is
packaged as a shell archive, so you'll probably need a unix box to
unpack it. It has a few programs that can convert between various
Mac file formats (like BinHex and MacBinary) and, occasionally, text.

You can also extract just the data fork of a file, which is probably
closest to what you want... As I recall, most of the docs are in
MS Word 5 or RTF, once you extract them. You may also find files
which can only be read by Apple DocViewer... In this case, you just
need to go out and buy a mac. :-)

Hope this helps, -- Tim
