Telecommunication networks are complex, constantly changing structures which have
to satisfy quite diverse demands. The design, implementation and management of
these networks and of the services they support,
require advanced software development methods and
techniques. In this, they have a high potential to benefit from object-oriented
(OO) technology. A good example is the area of telecommunication management network
(TMN), where the evolving standards are based on OO concepts from the
very beginning.

The purpose of this workshop is to enable the presentation and discussion of
advanced applications of OO in the area of network design, implementation, and
management. By this we want to gain a representative survey of existing
experiments and real applications of OO, and to identify benefits, problems and
still open issues.

\medskip

Since many topics may be relevant to this workshop, the following list just gives
a first indication of them and is in no way exhaustive:
\begin{itemize}
\item Object-based knowledge representation (reflection, constraints,
       relations, viewpoints, classification, ...);
\item Advanced OO aspects in network management standards and recommendations
       (TMN, OSI, ...);
\item OO approaches for traffic management;
\item OO approaches for service design, implementation and management;
\item OO and performance evaluation (system representation, simulation, ...);
\item OO analysis, specification and design (benefits over traditional
       methods);
\item Concurrent and/or distributed OO implementations (eg. of databases);
\item OO implementation of time and space critical algorithms (feasibility,
       maintainability in view of changing the algorithm, ...);
\item OO interactive and graphical user interfaces (front ends for network
       visualisation, manipulation, animation, analysis, ...);
\item OO integration of separate tools (e.g. for unified access, interworking,
       and harmonised user interfaces).
\end{itemize}

{\bf Participation:~}
Participants will be selected on the basis of either a short position paper (1 or
2 pages, that may serve as a startpoint for discussion after a short
presentation), or of a long paper (up to 10 pages, for presentation at the
workshop). Long papers must describe significant research studies or
applications, and should discuss benefits, drawbacks and limits of the use of
object-oriented technology in the given context.

\medskip

{\bf Submissions:~}
Long paper submissions should be sent to the chairman, preferably by electronic
mail (LaTeX, Postscript, MIF, and RTF formats will be accepted). If sent by
surface mail, 4 paper copies are needed. The deadline for submitting long papers
is April 28, 1995. An acknowledgement of reception will be sent by e-mail or
by fax to the author. The first page of the paper should include name, address,
telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author.

Short papers for presentations should be sent to the chairman,
by electronic mail {\bf only}, before May 19, 1995.

Notification of acceptance will be mailed or faxed by June 9, 1995. Minor
modifications to the long papers may be asked at that stage, and in that case a
revised paper should be sent before June 23, 1995.
