                                ECAI-96 Workshop on

                       NON-STANDARD CONSTRAINT PROCESSING

                       August 13, 1996, Budapest, Hungary

                                  Call for Papers

Scope

Non-standard constraint satisfaction problems are becoming hot research
topics because of two reasons: the expressive power of classical, 'flat',
CSPs is not sufficient to model several real-life problems, where
alternatives, priorities, conditions and changes in time play an essential
role. Moreover, in real-life situations one is often confronted with over- or
underconstrained problems. On the other hand, the essential difficulty of
CSPs induced much interest in solution techniques which may be
appropriate to handle 'softer' CSPs. The non-standard CSPs often require
or make possible the application of other solution methods than
deterministic search.
The workshop will provide a wide forum to present new results as well as
to raise and discuss open questions related to different generalisations of
CSPs and appropriate solution techniques, such as:
    - partial constraint satisfaction,
    - hierarchical constraint satisfaction,
    - fuzzy constraint satisfaction,
    - dynamic constraint satisfaction,
    - relaxation of overconstrained problems,
    - meta-CSPs,
    - CSPs with special domains (e.g. continuous, time interval),
    - applicability of standard methods for solving non-standard CSPs,
    - special solution methods, e.g. approximate and parallel algorithms,
        local search.

Framework

The one-day workshop will consist of paper sessions and a panel session.
In the paper sessions, a representative selection of the accepted refereed
papers, introducing hot topics and different methodologies, will be
presented and discussed. In the panel session, moderated by invited experts
of the related fields, some pre-selected research and application issues will
be put forward for discussion.

In order to have vivid and fruitful discussions, the papers and panel topics
will be available before the workshop, and participants will be encouraged
to post questions and comments in advance. In addition to people from the
classical constraint community, researchers from other fields such as OR,
knowledge-based systems, graph theory, evolutionary computation and
neural networks are encouraged to participate.

We are planning to publish the papers and the discussions and conclusions
in a workshop proceedings.

Application

In attending the workshop, priority will be given to those who submit a
paper or propose discussion issues.

Authors are invited to submit papers not exceeding 12 pages, printed in
12pt, before 22 March 1996.

All intended participants are encouraged to submit a one-page statement of
their interest in non-standard constraint processing, including a few specific
issues suggested for panel discussion, the sooner the better, but not later
than 15 May 1996.

Submissions should be sent to both workshop chairs preferably by
electronic mail, in self-contained Postscript.

Participants will have to pay a workshop fee of 50 ECU and must register
for ECAI-96.

Important dates:

Date of submissions of papers 22 March
Notification of acceptance... 22 April
