Ed Ian Allen (i17@netcom.com) wrote inter miscellanea:

Your incorporated name is total happenstance, Monsieur L'Edouard Ian!
As Allen was August Kubizek to Gates, so Murray and Naiden were pals.

The crowning glory of the Allen & Gates team is the new Allen Library
on the verdant campus of the University of Washington, which contains
such mentifico-essential journals as The Behavioral & Brain Sciences.
But as for the interlocking parimutuel fates of NJN & ATM, cf Vergil:

Infandum, Ed Ian, iubes renovare dolorem sed si tantus amor incipiam.

Allen and I both saw magazine articles on microcomputers back in 1974
but all I did was send away for the construction plans of the Mark 8.
I did not fly away to Albuquerque because I had already been there to
study at the Nuclear Training Directorate of Sandia Base back in 1969
while Naiden was attending medical school and our coeval Bill Clinton
was at Oxford. I was on a different plane of ambition than Naiden or
Clinton because in 1965 I decided to work on AI even if it took until
I reached the age of ninety-nine, created an AI and then keeled over.

At 33 in 1979 the design for AI was ready, E.I., but no one listened.
Then began my major attempts to build the AI, each ending in failure.
At the end of 1981 I wrote to my Akademgorodok contact that I gave up
on the AI project, but I was totally shamed to find out that he wrote
simultaneously to me about his effort to promote my theory in Russia.
Over 1982 I mailed diagram-postcards to one thousand neuroscientists.

Still the project fizzled, until in 1988 I got scared that 20 summers
had elapsed since Prague Spring graduation, so I paid for AI magazine
ads in AI Expert, PC AI, and Neural Network Review. Meanwhile Naiden
was wealthy; Clinton was governor; Gates & Allen were goose-stepping.

Honestly, Ed Alien, I tried to give up the AI project at end of 1989,
but I was done in by a most nefarious scheme of the US Postal Service
after I mailed out seven thousand suitable-for-framing Eureka!-calls.
Have you ever heard of the USPS entrapment ploy, "Philatelic Window"?
There I stood, dumbfounded and amazed at the hologram "Space Station"
envelopes that sparkled and shone and soon the AI mania was on again!
How was I to know that one AAAI member in Europe was the chief editor
of his nation's official journal of AI, in which he would publish me?

So I have given up on all attempts to end the AI project, Ed Ian. It
has a life of its own and I am as one who lingers on to watch the Web:
