Do AI programs exist that will:

-    input a function of several variables 

-    output a  parsimonious functional  form whose parameters can
     be   later   fit  to   the  input  function using  numerical
     optimization

Its OK    if   there are    some basic  assumptions limiting  the
functional form such as continous, differentiable, etc.

If such  exists, where  does one   find this program and how well
does it work?
