    The correct answer is (q).

The person posing as Dawn M. Malewski went to school, we think, but
it's not worth mincing words: we don't care.

the readers of this [sic] newsgroup have seen, some let in students who

at worst, and ... annoying.

Can anybody tell me how *I* can go through such a harrowing

I sincerely apologize for my off-topic postings on miscellaneous
newsgroups. This will probably be the last post I ever make. I am one
of only a handful of students who have had the courage to take a stand
against Edward Reingold and actually say that he sucks and deserves to be
fired for his despicable attitude toward undergraduates, his unfair and
unethical grading practices, etc.

Let me tell you my story. I was a student in CS 373 Spring 1994 at
UIUC, which is a course called "Combinatorial Algorithms" for juniors &
seniors in computer science, and for beginning graduate students.

Edward Reingold went way out of his way to screw as many people over
when I took the course with him in Spring 1994. He doesn't care about
whether or not the undergraduates learn anything, because most, if not all,
of the graduate students have already taken a course in algorithms before,
so he just doesn't bother to cover the basics. Anything goes in Edward
Reingold's class.

I admit that Edward Reingold is a very good lecturer and overall, a
smart man, but he is a very bad teacher and wants to make the undergrads
learn as little as possible. Every single undergraduate in the class when
I took CS 373 agreed that Reingold was the absolute worst. Everybody I
know hated him. Many people dropped the course because Reingold is such
an asshole, but I had no choice but to take the course because I wanted
to finish my degree.

Edward Reingold assumes that you know everything there is to know
about combinatorics, graph theory, etc. He takes recently-solved
problems from the literature and expects students to solve them. What
an asshole.

Edward Reingold NEVER holds regularly scheduled office hours. Edward
Reingold gets pissed off when people ask him questions outside of class,
and for unknown reasons, he hates undergraduates and makes it plenty
obvious that he thinks teaching undergraduates is a waste of his time.
Reingold basically assumes that all the undergraduates are stupid. As
I said before, Edward Reingold sucks.

The TA for the course, Prashant Saxena, was almost as bad as Edward
Reingold. It seemed like to me that Prashant was aspiring to be just like
Edward Reingold someday. If you asked him a simple question, he ALWAYS
tried to throw you off with a difficult to understand response. There
was just no point in asking Prashant for help, because he wasn't willing
to help anybody, except the graduate students.

Now, I told you that Edward Reingold is a good lecturer, but his
lectures are VERY SHALLOW. He hardly covers anything at all. He doesn't
go into any details at all. He only scratches the surface and expects
students to fill in everything else. Edward Reingold is a shitty teacher.

The homeworks were so damn difficult that most of the time, not a
single undergraduate could do any of the problems. Even many graduate
students got C's in the course, because they got fucked over by Reingold
too, because he sucks so bad, doesn't follow the course syllabus, and
chooses whatever advanced topics he feels like choosing.

Edward Reingold tries to be nice, by telling his stupid and lousy
jokes at the beginning of each class. His jokes are terrible. I haven't
personally heard him give an offensive joke, but I'm sure that Reingold
occasionally pokes fun at Palestinians, undergraduates, and whoever else
he doesn't like, whenever he thinks he can get away with it. Reingold,
you suck. You suck really bad.

This is all fine and dandy, but Edward Reingold is a shithead and
complete asshole when it comes to grading. In a class of 70 or more
undergraduates, Edward Reingold will only give 1 or 2 As. Maybe half or
more of the graduate students will get an A, but undergraduates rarely
get an A from Reingold, because Reingold sucks. There are tons of
graduate students in the course, and because Reingold sucks so bad, he
doesn't grade grads and undergrads separately. Reingold always claims
that he has separate distributions, but he actually doesn't. Reingold
just lies and deceives everybody, and then fucks them over at the end
of the course.

This is also fine and dandy, because I just want to pass the damn
course and get my degree! Well, after the course was over and that
final exam from hell, Edward Reingold decided to pull a dirty trick and
this is why I am so pissed off at the asshole.

I went over to the TA's office because he had said that the final
grades in the course were posted, and I went over there and saw that I
got a D. Yippee! I got a passing grade from that asshole Reingold!

He has the final grade sheet ordered by pseudonyms for each student,
so we couldn't easily tell how many As, how many Bs, etc. without going
through the whole damn thing. He gave out almost no As to anybody,
and gave many graduate students B's (I heard some of them were pretty
damn pissed off), and gave out tons of bad grades.

I looked VERY CLOSELY at the grade sheet, and I noticed that there
was a student in the course who was 2% or 3% BELOW me, but that student
got a HIGHER GRADE! I saw this, and I was like: THIS IS BULLSHIT!

Edward Reingold and his old-boys network and his unethical practice
of not using the same grading scale for all students. I got a D in the
course, but there was a student who did WORSE in the course than I did,
but that person got a C. THIS IS BULLSHIT Reingold, you asshole, and
you know it! (In case Edward Reingold is reading this and forgot which
student he favored or whatever in the course, the pseudonym of the student
I am talking about was "HerfJ" or something like that.)

I knew that Reingold sucked, but I was never told that he doesn't even
use the same grading scale for all the students. A person who did worse
than I did in the course, got a higher grade than I did. This is just
bullshit.

Edward Reingold sucks and deserves to be fired. Any professor who
doesn't apply the same grading standards to all students ought be
disciplined, but oh no, not Edward Reingold; Edward Reingold is a full
professor, so despite complaints, the University of Illinois can't get
rid of the damn cockroach.

If I had had time and didn't have job interviews, etc. to worry about,
I would have filed a complaint against Reingold with the University, like
a few other students in the past, who have had the courage to do so, and
then I would have sued Edward Reingold for his bullshit, unfair, unethical
grading practices.

Now, maybe you people can understand where I'm coming from and why
I'm making these posts about Edward Reingold.

I can only offer my apology to Illinois Inst. of Tech. alumni --
I slammed Reingold about his going to IIT because I needed to have some
kind of excuse to attack the asshole and make fun of him. I'm sorry about
that.

This experience has been healthy for me and will help me in my
healing process, while I still try to recover from my experience with
that total asshole, Edward Reingold.

I am a normal person, and in all likelihood, will not be making any
more posts about Edward Reingold. But, if you have an Edward Reingold
story of your own, please, by all means, post it.

I hope that my postings about Edward Reingold have not been all for
naught. There have been many people, whose academic careers at UIUC were
pleasant and enjoyable, except for their algorithms course with Reingold.
Edward Reingold is a cretin and deserves a pink slip.

I just want to remind you all that Edward Reingold has never won any
awards for teaching or research. Edward Reingold may have been a good
teacher many years ago, but he sure as hell ain't a good teacher today.
Some of you people reading this might think that Edward Reingold just had
a bad semester, or maybe one student is pissed off about their grade, but
I am not pissed off about my grade. I am happy that I passed the course.
But, I *am* pissed off that Reingold doesn't apply the same scale to all
students, and if you ever talk to a UIUC student, just ask them about
Reingold and they'll have all sorts of stories to tell you about Reingold.

Edward Reingold has a long history, a terrible reputation within the
University of Illinois, and he's been pulling his dirty tricks for too
long now. I hope anybody at UIUC reading this will stand up for their
rights or the rights of students and actually do something about it,
like actually disciplining Reingold for his actions.

You might think that Reingold is just bad. No, Reingold is VERY VERY
BAD. Reingold is TERRIBLE. Edward Reingold sucks. Reingold is the worst
teacher I have ever had in my entire life.

Thank you for your patience and time in reading this; I hope that if
you know Reingold and see him, I hope you call him an asshole to his face,
or if you ever have the misfortune of meeting him, avoid Edward Reingold
as if he was some kind of plague.

P.S. By the way Edward, if you're reading this, do you deny ever taking
coins out of your pocket and throwing them at students? Isn't this
battery? Why do you do this?

Where did Paul Wilson go to school?

a) Ph.D., Stanford

b) Ph.D., Princeton

c) Ph.D., U of California at Berkeley

d) Ph.D., U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

e) B.S.. Regents College of the University of the State of New York
M.S., Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago

    The correct answer is (e).

Paul Wilson went to Univ of Illinois at Chicago. I will not mince my
words Paul Wilson: you are pathetic.

And I thought UT-Austin had a good computer science department, but as
the readers of this newsgroup have seen, UT-Austin's computer science dept
has a professor from the Univ of Illinois at Chicago named Paul Wilson who
goes around wasting precious bandwidth with his posts bragging about how
he's at a top 10 department, etc.

Can anybody out there tell me how *I* can get a Ph.D. from the Univ of
Illinois at Chicago via correspondence?

By the way, did you know that Edward Reingold is OLDER than Robert
Tarjan, but that Tarjan is the superior researcher? How many more awards
does Robert Tarjan have then Edward Reingold?

As a former UofI graduate student, I must agree with you that Reignold
is an asshole. I took his Algorithm (CS373) and I dropped it later
because I do not learn what I expect. He asked us to buy his book,
and his book sucks. He also does not like students to ask him
questions, especally those he cannot answer. One of my friends failed
in CS qualifing exam because he asked too many questions in his
class. He insisted to fail him although all other processors passed
him. In the class, he keeped saying that most of the students
are so stupid and they cannot do the homework or exam right.
If students know eveything, they do not need to sit in his class
to accept his insults. Anyway, I never have any good impression
on him.

ychen

ps. I am curious why you posted that.
