Subject: examples of openings?

In mathematical morphology, one defines an opening as an operator F such
that:

1) F is idempotent: for any X, F(F(X))=F(X);

2) F is anti-extensive: for any X, F(X) is less than or equal to X;

3) F is increasing: for any X,Y, if X is less than or equal to Y, then
   F(X) is less than or equal to F(Y).

A well-known example is the opening by a structuring element B, which
transforms a set X into the union of all translates of B contained in X.

Other examples exist: (a) For a fixed point p, the operator extracting
from a set X its connected component containing p. (b) The intersection
of a set with a fixed set A.

I would like to have as many as possible examples of openings of an
unusual type arising in practical problems of image analysis.

computation.  Meaning, all type of algorithms that can be described by
a (linear/nonlinear) heat equation.  I'd appreciate any references to

We are looking for human brain MR images for our vision research.  We
have heard that Barrow Neurological Institute (Phoenix, AZ) might be
able to offer those images.  Can anyone tell us how to contact them?
(It would be most helpful if the source of data specify image content, 
resolution, format, etc.)

Any suggestions or pointers will receive a warm welcome ! In a few weeks, 
if I get a sufficient response, I will submit a listing of this information.

  The  Centre  for Cognitive Science,  University  of  Western
  Ontario,  London,  Canada,   has  openings  for  a  Research
  Assistant and a Post-doctoral Fellow beginning in the summer
  of 1990 or  Jan  1,  1991.   Areas of research include human
  vision and visual  attention, motion and texture perception,
  and human-computer interaction.  The Centre is well equipped
  with a network of  10  SUN  workstations, a Silicon Graphics
  machine with 3-D capability, and special hardware for vision
  experiments.  The research  and  staff  are supported by the
  Information  Technology  Research  Centre  (a   Province  of
  Ontario Centre of Excellence),  the  Institute  for Robotics
  and  Intelligent  Systems, and the  Canadian  Institute  for
  Advanced  Research.    Research  staff  have  access  to the
  network of researchers associated with these institutes.

  Candidates  with experience in both experimental design  and
  in building  computational  models  will  be  given  special
