I am engaged in an argument on the alt.architecture newsgroup that
might be of interest to you guys.

In the article in question I am arguing that because of the advent of
expert systems and artifical intelligence research the role of
architects will have to change. In the future, computers will do
much of the work previously done by designers and architects, so
designers and architects need to reasses their role.

The primary argument against me is that "AI is dead and has nothing to
do with the future". Would someone out there like to address this question
in this news group -- I'm a little confounded. I have taken it
as a matter of course that AI systems research will eventually have a deep
effect on many design/scheduling type tasks; I am NOT arguing that
we will have Turing-proof machine intelligences that will become
virtual architects, I am arguing that expert system style program/databases
will eventually be able to design buildings as well as architects (as
point of fact, I've seen some graduate programs that already do) currently
do.

Please respond -- I'd like some input/references to work with in the
arena of AI assisted design, etc. Thanks.
