Perhaps I am the one hallucinating.  I was interpreting "S ... behaves from
12:00 to 12:07 as if it had a certain description D," as trying to
capture the behavior of an FSA with I/O behavior (S), by one with
no I/O (D):  D acts as if it had seen input.  But after reading those 
paragraphs several times now, I am only certain that whatever Putnam is saying, 
he is not saying it clearly.
