Upon which point, ? how much effort is now going on in AI research
to built long duration, non twiddlable sensory memory based test beds...
systems with designed capability to process (sort, react to, ect)
data streams for 10 to 100 years. If there readers here involved in
academic (masters or Phd) programms with this as major project I would
be very interested! Human style intelligence (?natural intelligences if
you are a degree/spectrum of intelligence believer like I am...the frog
is intelligent relative to the rock with zero I value and even to the
bacteria) is in fact the result of a history.
Some of the problem with Chinese room and the discussion of
syntax and semantics is the invalid attempt to strip off a large
component of the semantics of "a complex world" and "a long history"
As a symbol processor, the "rule" semantics cover "understanding",
in a larger context, it's easy to say "the symbol processor"
lacks understanding. Whats seldom examined is the reflected
issue of how often and how much human minds seem to have modes and
act as "symbol manipulating", "non understanding" systems. Some other
ancedotal type data are things like "what are the words" to
the national anthem or the pledge of alligence or some song.
How much semantic and action bile and blood has been directed to
syntax like "He is a communist" or "Pagans must convert to the worship of
the One God per Christos" If there are any on this bboard who have not
been exposed to the concepts of "General Semantics", a little reading
would be in order. " " The map is not the territory " " can be
made fundamental to your thinking about AI, communications and intelligence.
That various Maps help or hinder in different ways is also worth considering
as one walks around the boundary of "INTELLIGENCE"
