	The Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics is an
international tribune which aims at promoting the development of
non-classical logics in Computer Science, with contributions ranging
from mathematical foundations of such logics to their applications in
Computer Science.

	Non-classical logics cover a large variety of formalisms such
as~: modal logics, temporal logics, epistemic logics, conditional
logics, intermediate logics, non-monotonic logics, logics of
vagueness, logics of uncertainty, relevance logics, paraconsistent
logics, multivalued logics, logics of programs, etc.

	The following areas, among others, are relevant for the
Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics~:

\begin{itemize}
 \item	Formal aspects of non-classical formalisms (completeness,
decidability, complexity...)

 \item	Applications of non-classical logics to
\begin{itemize}
 \item	Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science (knowledge
representation, automated reasoning, natural language)

 \item	Theoretical Computer Science (program verification, program
synthesis...)
\end{itemize}
\end{itemize}

Applications to other domains are welcome if they illustrate the
usefulness of non-classical logics.

	The journal will be published twice yearly with regular papers
describing original work or high quality synthesis work, short
research notes, position papers, a problem section, information about
meetings and conferences, call for papers, and book reviews.

This issue of the Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics contain the
updated proceedings of a Seminar held in Rocamadour (France) in 1988
and that was entirely devoted to discussions among specialists of
numerical as well as symbolic approaches to automated reasoning under
incomplete or uncertain information. It will be an unusual journal
issue because consisting of printed discussions rather than
contributed papers. Three topics will be addressed : numerical models
of uncertainty, non-monotonic logics, and conditionals. This issue
can be viewed altogether as an informal introduction to currently hot
topics in non-classical logics, a debate on the future of these
topics, and a manifesto of various schools of thought that acknowledge
their common interest in non-classical logics as a new and important
emerging paradigm of information technology.
