Well, there were three separte greek `invasions' each of which contributed
to the number of greeks in the peninsula.  There were also corresponding
changes in the peninsular religions.  So my proposal (admittedly incomplete
as it is) depends on religious conservatism---an attested phenomenon in
the area.  I wouldn't subscribe to a simple theory of a greek aristocracy
since that clearly doesn't hold with the other facts about the 
peninsular greek culture and history.  Nevertheless, it would be
interesting to see more written on that subject.
