Ladies and Gentlemen:

I volunteer to edit/maintain a FAQ and/or newsletter for this newsgroup.
Possible topics are:

1) Philosophies of Searle, Penrose, Minsky, Churchlands, etc. - please email
representative quotes and summaries, as well as sources with page numbers.
Email addresses would be useful as well. Their backgrounds, etc.

2) Turing's (Ph.D?) thesis (introducing the Turing machine) and essay in Mind
(introducing artificial intelligence). Also, a biography of his life.

3) A hierarchical summary of common arguments/perspectives in the field,
classified as standard as possible (e.g. ``hard AI'', ``the systems reply'').
Where did the terms originate? Have they changed meaning? Information on the
past, present, and future trends.

4) FTP sites - If this has already been started elsewhere, I will gladly
forward relevant material if someone fills me in.

5) The recently started Loebner contest (the reward for a `successful' Turing
test).

6) Different perspectives on the meaning of those slippery words like
`understanding', `intelligence', `consciousness', `intentionality', etc.

7) List of interesting literature. Please comment on the appropriateness---the
audience it intends to address, the level of technical detail vs. popular
accounts, etc.

8) Famous experiments, pivotal events, and influential papers in the field:
Sejnowski's NetTalk, Winograd's SHRDLU, Minsky's Perceptrons, etc.

9) Whatever else of interest.

Please email material to guarantee I will see it. `subeditors' for a category
are encouraged to apply. In all responses, please be concise, `concrete' and
specific. Also, let me know if you could provide an FTP archive site for the
newsletter.

I'm committed to this over the long term, and hope to build up an interesting
and informative source. However, I can't make any guarantees how fast incoming
stuff can get assimilated.

A tentative title: ``The Turing Times''. Any other ideas?
