OK, I see you _were_ talking about the problem of calibration. And, yes,
measurement is more than quantization. You can also measure the
topological structure of the flow, and for many systems (particularly
chaotic ones), that's more interesting than quantitative measurements of
the system state at any specific time.

The conference proceedings for the Cambridge Conference on Dynamic
Modelling and Human Systems (12/10-13/90) should be coming out sometime in
the next few months. The title is Dynamical Modelling and the Study of
Change in Archaeology, S. E. van der Leeuw, ed., University of Edinburgh
Press. There are a number of papers relevant to this discussion, including
(I believe) Robert Rosen's comments as rappatour. (Did I get the spelling
right 8)).
