What does "population" mean in the phrases "population vector" and
"population coding" as used, for example, in two letters in _Neural
Computation_, vol 6, no 1, Jan 1994, pp 19 & 29?

I recently encountered the word "ensemble" used in the statistical
sense of "population", i.e. the set of all input vectors one wants
to generalize to. Is this term widely used and recognized?
