My own introduction to GA's was through Complexity (by M. Mitchell
Waldrop). In pursuing my interest I then read Artificial Life (by Steven
Levy) which was an excellent read. These are both non-mathematical
introductions to Genetic Algorithms, amongst other things. Since then I
have progressed and now own the rather daunting Genetic Programming by
John R. Koza. This will take somewhat longer to imbibe, and includes
some mathematics, but is prohibitively expensive. I was inticed into
buying it by Steven Levy's book, which I cannot recommend highly enough.

Hope that this helps.
