Do a biblio search for articles/books by James Bezdek. I found his work
extremely useful in this area. You can start with his dissertation, "Fuzzy
Mathematics in Pattern Classification," Ph.D. Dissertation, Center for
Applied Mathematics, Cornell University, 1973, if you want to go all of the way
back to the beginning. Two excellent books on the topic to begin with are:

  Bezdek, J.C.
Pattern Recognition with Objective Function Algorithms
  Plenum Press, London, 1981.

  Kandel
Fuzzy Techniques in Pattern Recognition -
  John Wiley & Sons, 1982.

An excellent next volume in the search is:

  Bezdek and Pal, editors:
Fuzzy Models For Pattern Recognition - Methods That Search for Structures in
Data
  IEEE Press, 1992.

Hopefully this will allow you to immerse youself in the field. There are
numerous articles on the topic, of course, but I think that these three would
provide superb foundation for any course of research in this subject area.

Good hunting!
