Have you read 'Fuzzy Output Sets: Their (Mis)Use in Fuzzy Modelling and
Control', M. Brown et al. , IEE Colloquium on Two Decades of Fuzzy Logic
Control , 1993 ?
I'm not sure that this gives the origins of the practice but I think it
discusses what you're talking about.
