                        INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
                 IN MUSIC AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

                       University of Edinburgh
Department of AI and Faculty of Music

                         15-17 September 1995

THE ICMAI'95

The International Congress in Music and AI will be held in Edinburgh,
Scotland. The conference is organised by the Faculty of Music and the
Department of AI at Edinburgh University.

Its main objective is to foster investigation of theories of music and
musical thought, and their relation to computation and AI systems. The
link between these two approaches - which has not received great attention
until now - is the main topic to be addressed. The aim is to stimulate the
exchange of ideas on the possibilities of extending or formulating new
(computational) theories of musical knowledge and cognition that may be
used to represent and manipulate musical structures and processes. Such
theories may provide useful insights into compositional, analytic and
educational aspects of musical practice.

The congress starts on early evening of Friday 15 September with a welcome
reception and a concert of contemporary music. On Saturday and Sunday
all the talks, presentations and panel discussions will take place from
morning till late afternoon. A second concert of contemporary music is
programmed for Saturday evening. Papers have been selected from submissions
by many authors world-wide. The full programme for the paper sessions is
announced below.

The conference organsisers are grateful for support from the IEEE CS Technical
Committee on Computer Generated Music, the Faculty of Music and Department of
Artificial Intelligence of the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh District
Council, Lothian and Edinburgh Enterprise Ltd, and to the University of
Edinburgh's Research Committee for their contribution of stlg1000 from the
Interdisciplinary Symposium Fund.
