There's a great deal of work on this, scattered over ALife workshop
proceedings, books on genetic algorithms, etc. The best place to start
is probably Axelrod's book ("The Evolution of Cooperation", Basic
Books, New York, 1984), which you ought to be able to find in most
university libraries.  There is also the occasional paper published in
"Science" and (I think) "Nature". Alife bibliographies will provide more
references.
