Perhaps also relevant here is the Mind Body Problem, which has exercised
Western Philosophers for the last 300 years or more.
Eastern Philosophers resolve the problem by declaring that it is unsolvable.
Western Philosopy has (slowly?) been coming to the same position over this 
century.

Also Complexity theory (Kolmogorov and others) suggests that the problem
of recognition is solved by finding the simplest representation.
It is still a representation, and not the real thing!

(All this will be obvious to philosophers)
