Sources for solenoids:

Look for the Thomas Register. Any library worth their salt should have it.
Another good source of company listings is the 4 volume EEM (Electronic
Engineers Master Catalog). Both list an extraordinary number of companies
selling and manufacturing everything.

A good source of powerful solenoids are old washing machines.

One of the larger manufacturers is Ledex:
