Haven't tried it, but there was an article in (I think) Radio Electronics
a while back on using Hall sensors to make a small digital compass. It probably
wouldn't be too difficult to modify theri design slightly so that instead of 
lighting up a ring of LED's, make it talk to an RS-232 port...
