ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

AWToMM 92

First Australian Workshop
on
The Theory of Machines and Mechanisms

9th  and 10th of November 1992

at

The University of Melbourne,
Parkville, Melbourne, Australia

AWToMM-92 plans to bring together a group of specialists and workers in
the field of the theory of machines and mechanisms. This is to be an
inaugural national meeting of workers in this field in Australia.
Overseas workers are also invited to attend.

Objectives:
o To promote continued development in the field of
machines and mechanisms, both in theoretical and experimental
research and its application to practice;

o To exchange scientific and engineering information
in the field of machines and mechanisms;

o To broaden contacts among persons and organizations
engaged in scientific or engineering work in the field of machines
and mechanisms or related sciences.

Themes:
o robots and manipulators;

o rotor dynamics;

o gearing, linkages, and cams;

o man-machine systems;

o computational geometry in machine design.

Proposed format:
The main objective of this workshop is to inform and provide a forum
for interchange of ideas for younger scientists and engineers working
in the field on machines and mechanisms or related sciences, who may
not have the opportunity to attend international conferences in their
specific fields. Consequently the workshop should provide insight
into the current state of the art as well as opportunities to
exchange ideas. The proposed format for the workshop is:

o one single stream of people, accepting that
there may be insufficient people in any one specialty to allow
for separate streams. This might impinge on the interests and
attention of some participants, but it will necessarily broaden
our appreciation of work in the field;

o papers in the morning sessions, followed by syndicate work
in the afternoon sessions.

Syndicate work will be aimed at exploring some generic problems in
machine and mechanism theory (note the themes above). Specialist
problem leaders will lead the syndicate discussions. The discussions
will be recorded for distribution and evaluation to all
participants.

Who Should Attend.
Postgraduate students, researches, and practitioners in disciplines
associated with the theory of machines and mechanisms. The main
objective of the workshop is to provide a common forum of exchange
for ideas in the theory of machines and mechanisms.

Submissions.
This is a call for submissions of papers and problem topics to
be explored in the syndicate sessions.

Papers: full papers (4000 to 5000 word presentations) or an
extended abstract (500 to 1000 words) should be submitted
for consideration of the technical committee before August 31, 1992.

Problem topics: These should be of a sufficiently generic nature
to allow the drawing together of a broad range of participants.
The following information should be submitted to the technical
committee for consideration:

1. Problems Statement

2. Current status

3. Significance: the tactical (short term) and strategic
(longer term) objectives and significance should be
enumerated.

4. Disciplines/Key technologies: the disciplines within
which the problem/solution is to be advanced.

5. Nominated problem leader: A desired problem leader
should be nominated. It is expected that problem
leaders of sufficient expertise will be available in
Australia.

Dates:
Abstracts/Problems submitted (latest)     31st. August 1992

Authors notified by 30th. September 1992

Please note that a proceedings will be produced.
