Information Technology Department to solve computer hardware and software
problems within the Science Libraries. Create Web-based special projects
and provide Web development assistance to colleagues in the University
Libraries as needed.

I have alternated teaching three courses online for 10 terms in Drexel’s
distance education program. Professional and Social Aspects of
Information Services — this course surveys the professional,
social, ethical, and legal issues that affect information service
professionals. This course addresses such topics as information law,
access, ownership, and censorship, as well as the sociology of
professions. Information Resources and Services I — this
course emphasizes techniques for building effective searching strategies
using various databases, as well as on the Internet. Resources in
Science & Technology — this course introduces major information
resources in the pure and applied sciences, including the physical and
biological sciences, engineering and technology, and interdisciplinary
subjects. Emphasizes collection building/management for print and
electronic resources, as well as user needs and reference service.

Taught graduate course: Introduction to Information Technologies. Students were provided hands-on experience with a variety of computing platforms, software applications, Web development, networking and Internet applications, graphics and multimedia applications, as well as discussing the implications of future technological developments for libraries and the use of the Internet to deliver library services. This course also attracted other graduate students from the Schools of Engineering, Business, Education, and Rehabilitation Sciences. The summer of 2002 I taught the course online through the School's distance education program, FastTrack.

Co-taught with the Dean of the School of Computer Science: Searching the Web and Beyond. Students solved different problems each week by searching the Web and all other likely places for answers. Students learned strategies and techniques for finding information on the Web more efficiently. Students learned about search engines, subject-oriented directories, and other tools.

Developed Sun's first library to support the information needs of a fast-paced scientific and engineering research community of over 11,000 employees worldwide. Guided the development of a one-person library into a full-service library supporting traditional and online library services, marketing/competitive research services, and an East Coast branch. Supervised a staff of one librarian and four research staff. Worked with third-party vendor to plan, design, and implement a UNIX-based integrated library information system called Sun Library at the Desktop, which included a CD-ROM gateway and access to full-text databases.

Designed and implemented a multimedia computer lab to support biomedical applications of computers for research and education in the School of Medicine, as well as in the other health sciences. Worked with reference staff to implement a training program in end-user database searching for faculty and students in the School of Medicine. Supervised one staff member and four work-study graduate students to make the Center available to patrons more than 100 hours per week.

Provided general reference service to college students in temporary grant-based position. Managed installation of staff microcomputers and developed a software lending library. The library received computer technology from a grant. I implemented the technology in the library, trained staff in its use, and assisted the library in the transition to a computerized environment using electronic resources to complement print resources.

Cataloged books on a bibliographic network called RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network). Cataloged first and rare editions of books under supervision of head cataloger. Assisted in the planning and installation of a microcomputer-based library automation system, as part of the University Libraries' initiative to computerize holdings in the Yale Library System. Worked with the Library of Congress to improve their cataloging quality assurance. Oversaw the acquisition of books using standing and blanket orders with vendors.
