FAQ
- How do I dress? I recommend a t-shirt and track pants (to prevent
floor-burn), and sneakers with ankle support. Non-athletic shoes are not
allowed. Please bring a white shirt AND a black or dark shirt.
- Do I need equipment? No equipment is necessary, IM will supply sticks,
goalie equipment, and officials. I recommend that you bring a protector-cup (if male), mouth guard, and a water bottle.
- Can I bring my own equipment? You can bring whatever you have. I plan
on bringing my own stick. You might also consider bringing hockey gloves, shin
guards, and knee or elbow pads if you have them. 'Play-it-again' sports in
Monroeville is a good place to buy these things cheap.
- Where do we play? The league plays in the converted pool room in Skibo Gym.
- When do we play? At randomly scheduled times between 6 and 11pm, Monday
through Thursday during the season, for a total of 4-5 games.
Rules
There are many rules, but these are the highlights. For the full rules,
drop by my (WeH 3508) or Weng-Keen's office (WeH 5130) for a copy.
- only the team captain may approach a referee about a disagreement---else
we might get a penalty
- no high sticking---the blade of your stick should never be above your waist,
at ANY time, including shooting, blocking the ball, running, or otherwise.
- no fighting---this sounds obvious, but it means that if one person gets in
one big scuffle then the whole team is kicked out of the league---so don't fight.
- no ICING---this is when you shoot the puck from behind our defensive line
(our quarter of the arena) to behind the other team's goal line with no-one
touching it. This isn't a penalty, but play will stop and there will be a
faceoff in our end.
- no non-running shoes allowed, no jewelry
- no penalty shots---last year there was a penalty shot after a penalty,
but now there will just be a faceoff.
Positions and Strategy
The consensus seems to be to have two forwards, a defenseman,
and a center, where the center is primarily concerned with defense
but may play offense if it looks safe.
Defense: you should always clear the ball by shooting up along the boards, NOT
by passing out in the open in front of our goal. Offense: when the ball is in
our end, you should be covering a man and be waiting for the pass along the
boards. When the ball is in their end, if you are digging for the ball you
should be trying to get the ball in front of their net, and otherwise you
should be planted in front of their net.

Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!

Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!

Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs the cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do! We do!
